The 6 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking, Dian Fossey & Wildlife Safari combines savannah wildlife viewing in Akagera National Park with gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, topped with a visit to Dian Fossey’s grave and the ruins of her house.

Akagera National Park is home to over 1,500 wild animals, including the Big Five, and over 500 bird species. You will enjoy game drives and a boat cruise on Lake Ihema, spotting aquatic wildlife such as hippos and crocodiles. Volcanoes National Park offers mountain gorilla trekking in the lush Virunga forests, where you will also learn about Dian Fossey’s conservation legacy.

The safari starts and ends in Kigali and can be customized to your travel dates, accommodation preferences, and budget.

Day 1: Kigali City Tour & Transfer to Akagera National Park

After breakfast, your driver-guide will pick you up for a Kigali city tour, including visits to Kimironko Market, the King’s Palace, and the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

Drive northeast to Akagera National Park, arriving in the evening. Check in at your lodge, relax, enjoy dinner, and overnight.

Day 2: Morning Game Drive & Afternoon Boat Cruise on Lake Ihema

Start the day with an early game drive, spotting lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, leopards, rhinos, and various antelope species.

After lunch, enjoy a boat cruise on Lake Ihema, observing hippos, crocodiles, and over 500 bird species including shoebill storks, herons, ibis, and jacanas.

Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park & Cultural Experience

After breakfast, enjoy a short exit game drive and drive to Volcanoes National Park (approx. 4–5 hours).

Arrive for lunch and relaxation, then enjoy an evening cultural visit to Iby’iwacu Village, participating in traditional Rwandan dances and learning about local customs.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking Experience

After an early breakfast, transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for briefing.

Accompanied by experienced ranger guides, hike into the forest to find a habituated gorilla family. Spend one hour observing and photographing the gorillas in their natural habitat.

Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Return to the lodge for lunch, relaxation, dinner, and overnight.
