Tour Summary

A 6-day Rwanda luxury safari delivers an extraordinary, highly exclusive journey through the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” Rwanda is Africa’s premier high-end eco-tourism destination, designed perfectly for travelers who want ultra-luxury lodges, seamless logistics, and deeply intimate wildlife encounters.

With 6 days, you can bypass the road travel entirely by utilizing private helicopter charters, allowing you to effortlessly combine a bucket-list Mountain Gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park with an exclusive big-game savanna safari in Akagera National Park or a chimpanzee trek in the prehistoric canopy of Nyungwe National Park.

Day 1: Arrival and Fly to Volcanoes National Park.

Once you land at Kigali International Airport (KGL), where you are fast-tracked through VIP customs. Step directly onto a private helicopter on the tarmac. Fly over Rwanda’s stunning terraced green hills, landing 25 minutes later on the private helipad of your volcanic ridge lodge.

Later enjoy a private evening tasting by the roaring fireplace, accompanied by a complimentary massage. Later dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park.

Wake up to the Virunga volcanoes for the briefing about the rules and regulations during gorilla trekking. Your private guide takes you to the park headquarters, where you are assigned an exclusive gorilla family. This is where is where you will hike into the bamboo forests with expert trackers to spend a life-changing one hour sitting just feet away from a wild mountain gorilla family.

After one hour return to your lodge for relaxation, later dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Golden Monkey trekking and visiting Ellen DeGeneres Campus.

After breakfast, you will head back into the forest for a lighter, playful trek to track the endangered Golden Monkeys, known for their bright golden coats and energetic canopy acrobatics. In the afternoon, take an exclusive private tour of the state-of-the-art Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Fly to Volcanoes National Park to Akagera National Park.

After breakfast, check out from your lodge then board your private helicopter and fly clear across the country to Akagera National Park on the eastern border. The scenery shifts dramatically from cloud forests to expansive, lake-fringed savannas. Arrive at Rwanda’s only true luxury safari camp, near Lake Ihema.

Start on a private sunset boat safari, sipping champagne while watching massive pods of hippos, crocodiles, and elephants bathing along the shoreline. Later dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Full day in Akagera National Park.

Spend a full day exploring Magashi’s private wilderness concession. Because this area is restricted to lodge guests, you will enjoy crowd-free viewings of lions, leopards, rhinos, and large herds of buffalos.

In the evening you will head out for a night game drive using specialized spotlights to watch leopards and hyenas track their prey in the dark, capped off with a candlelit dinner. Later dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6: Walking safari and Return Flight.

Enjoy a peaceful morning walking safari along Lake Ihema with an expert armed guide, listening to Akagera’s spectacular birdlife. Board your final helicopter charter back to Kigali for a brief city art tour and boutique shopping before your international flight home.

Gorilla trekking permits in Rwanda are strictly capped at $1,500 USD per person, per day. This fee solely covers the park entry and tracking team. Because permits are highly restricted to protect the primates, your luxury operator must secure these 6 to 12 months in advance.

Helicopter Logistics vs. Baggage: Utilizing Akagera Aviation helicopter charters turns 5-hour bumpy drives into breathtaking 30-minute transfers. However, helicopters have strict weight and space limits. You must use soft-sided duffel bags.

Exclusive Primate Options: If you prefer ancient rainforest canopies over open savannas, then change Days 4 and 5 (Akagera) for Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Physical Preparation: Even the most luxury gorilla trek requires hiking through steep, muddy, and thick jungle terrain at altitudes reaching up to 10,000 feet. While rangers do their best to match your fitness level to a closer gorilla family, walking on a treadmill at an incline for a few weeks prior will greatly enhance your enjoyment.

Gardening Glove Trick: The luxury lodges will provide you with most things, but ensure you pack a high-quality pair of thick gardening gloves. When hiking through the Volcanoes rainforest, you will frequently need to grab onto branches and vines, which are heavily covered in stinging nettles.
