Nyungwe National Park is Rwanda’s crown jewel for forest birding, harboring over 320 recorded species, including 29 Albertine Rift Endemics. Because it is one of the oldest and best-preserved montane rainforests in Africa, a 3-day itinerary focused on specific altitudinal tracks gives you an exceptional opportunity to log highly localized, rare forest interior species.
Upon arrival, drive roughly 5 hours from Kigali to Nyungwe. Spend the afternoon tackling the Mount Bigugu trail. This high-altitude path goes up to 2,950 meters, taking you through bamboo zones and lobelia-filled valleys, to see Red-collared Mountain Babbler (Nyungwe’s superstar), Kungwe Apalis, Neumann’s Warbler, Archer’s Robin-Chat, and Stripe-breasted Tit. Dinner and overnight stay.
Spend the morning on the Igishigishigi Trail, which includes the famous suspension Canopy Walkway hanging 70 meters above the ravine. This places you directly at eye level with canopy-dwelling species. Spend the afternoon exploring the lush Kamiranzovu Swamp trail, to see Great Blue Turaco, Ruwenzori Turaco, Regal Sunbird, Purple-breasted Sunbird, Grauer’s Swamp Warbler, and Albertine Boubou.
After breakfast, check out and head to the lower altitudinal areas of the forest along the Cyamudongo isolated forest patch or the Gisakura tea estate fringes early in the morning to see Kivu Ground Thrush, White-tailed Blue Flycatcher, Rwenzori Batis, Handsome Francolin, and Black-faced Rufous Warbler. These forest edges offer excellent visibility before you make the return drive back to Kigali.

Nyungwe is a rugged mountain forest characterized by steep ridges and deep valleys. Unlike savanna birding from a 4×4 vehicle, birding here is done entirely on foot. Paths can be slippery, steep, and muddy. You need a reasonable level of physical fitness, broken-in waterproof hiking boots, and walking sticks.
As a true tropical rainforest, Nyungwe experiences sudden, heavy downpours at any time of year, even during the dry seasons (June to August and December to February). Rain can shut down bird activity completely for hours. Bring high-quality, lightweight rain gear and waterproof covers for your camera and binoculars.
The drive from Kigali to Nyungwe takes around 5 to 6 hours each way. On a 3-day itinerary, Days 1 and 3 will be split between driving and birding. To maximize your time, start your road transfers from Kigali exceptionally early (around 5:00 AM) so you don’t lose prime daylight hours.
