A 5-day cross-border Tanzania and Kenya honeymoon safari is an exhilarating, fast-paced whirlwind that brings you to the ultimate highlights of East Africa: the Serengeti National Park and the Masai Mara National Reserve. Because these two legendary parks share a seamless ecosystem divided only by a national border, combining them in 5 days is entirely possible but it requires precise scheduling and the use of internal bush flights to avoid wasting precious days on the road.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and board a scheduled safari plane directly to a northern Serengeti airstrip. Toast to your arrival as you head straight into a late afternoon game drive to see the park’s famous incredible animal species like lions, buffaloes, elephants, rhinos and leopards and among others like hyenas, cheetahs, and among others without bird species. Later dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, spend a full day tracking large prides of lions, leopards, and massive herds of elephants. If traveling during the dry season, you will spend the day along the Mara River looking for dramatic wildlife river crossings. A private, romantic sundowner set up on a rocky outcrop (kopje) with panoramic views of the Serengeti sunset. Later dinner and overnight stay.
Wake up early for breakfast, check out and then take a short flight to the Tarime/Migori border. After quick customs and immigration clearances, a Kenyan bush plane whisks you directly into the Masai Mara. Arrive at your new luxury lodge in time for a game drive, followed by an intimate candlelit dinner under the stars. Dinner and overnight stay.
Rise before the sun for a breathtaking Hot Air Balloon Safari over the iconic Mara plains. Watch the shadows of giraffes and elephants stretch across the landscape below. Celebrate landing with a best bush champagne breakfast. Spend your final afternoon on a private game drive or enjoying an intimate, guided cultural encounter with local Maasai warriors. Later dinner and overnight stay.
Enjoy one last en-route morning game drive to spot any elusive wildlife missing from your checklist. Board your final bush plane to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport (WIL), where a private vehicle will transfer you to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) for your flight home.

Border Crossing Logistics: You cannot simply drive or fly straight through Serengeti-Masai Mara border checkpoint (the Sand River gate is closed to tourists). You must take a flight to the Tarime airstrip (Tanzania), take a 45-minute road Tarim transfer across the border to the Migori airstrip (Kenya) to clear customs, and then board a separate Kenyan flight into the Mara. Work with an operator who handles this transition seamlessly.
Visa and Health Requirements: You will need two separate visas (a Tanzania Volunteer/Tourist Visa and a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization/eTA). Furthermore, transitioning between Tanzania and Kenya makes a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate strictly mandatory at the border.
Luggage Constraints are Absolute: Over these 5 days, you will board 3 to 4 tiny bush aircraft. Luggage limits are 15 kg (33 lbs) total per person, and it must be in soft-sided duffel bags. Hard luggage with wheels will be rejected at the airstrip.
The Pace vs. Romance Trade-off: A 5-day dual-country safari means packing your bags, checking in, and checking out multiple times. If your priority is deep relaxation, spa days, and long mornings sleeping in, you may find this pace too exhausting. If you want a more slow-paced romantic trip, it is highly recommended to spend all 5 days in either the Serengeti or the Masai Mara.
Timing the Great Migration: The animals move freely between these two parks. To get the absolute most out of this specific route, book between July and October, when the Great Migration herds are concentrated heavily in northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara, maximizing your wildlife views with minimal travel distance.
