Tour Summary

4-day Murchison Falls National Park birding safari targets Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area. It’s a home to a staggering checklist of over 450 bird species, the park encompasses rolling savannah plains, dense riverine woodlands, Borassus palm forests, and the dramatic wetlands of the Nile-Lake Albert Delta. This short, itinerary is strategically designed to locate the prehistoric Shoebill Stork alongside unique savannah and waterbird specialties.

Day 1: Entebbe/Kampala to Murchison Falls through Ziwa and Top of the Falls.

Depart Kampala or Entebbe in the morning for the journey north. Stop at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for brief woodland birding to track down the Bruce’s Green Pigeon and Western Banded Snake Eagle. Enter Murchison Falls National Park and drive straight to the magnificent Top of the Falls. Here, you will watch the Nile squeeze through a 7-meter gorge while scanning the exposed rocks below for the specialized Rock Pratincole. Drive to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Northern Bank Savannah Birding and Nile Boat Cruise.

After breakfast, cross the river for a morning game drive across the rolling savannahs of the Buligi tracks. Your birding guide will target localized grassland specialties like the massive Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Northern Carmine Bee-eater, Denham’s Bustard, Black-billed Barbet, and Secretary Bird. In the afternoon, board a launch trip upstream toward the base of the falls. The riverbanks and cliffs are alive with waterbirds, including the African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron, and massive colonies of Red-throated Bee-eaters nesting in the sand walls. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Private Albert Delta Boat Cruise and Kaniyo Pabidi Forest Birding.

Enjoy breakfast, then go for a private boat cruise downstream toward the Nile-Lake Albert Delta. This tranquil, papyrus-fringed ecosystem is a prime stronghold for the Shoebill Stork. You will also search for the rare Pel’s Fishing Owl, African Skimmer, and White-winged Warbler. In the afternoon, head to the southern sector to bird the margins of the Kaniyo Pabidi Forest for West African forest species like the Great Blue Turaco. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Return to Entebbe.

After breakfast, check out and enjoy en-route morning game drive tracing seasonal woodland fringes to tick off any missed raptors, nightjars, or grassland passerines. Begin the return journey south back to Kampala or Entebbe, arriving in the late afternoon or evening for your international departure flight that brings your safari come to the end.

Private Boat Booking for the Delta: While the afternoon cruise to the base of the falls uses a large, stable commercial launch boat, the morning cruise to the Albert Delta should strictly be booked as a private, smaller motorized boat.

Murchison Falls sits along a critical migratory flyway. While resident birding is superb year-round, traveling between late November and April introduces an influx of Palearctic and Afrotropical migratory species. This significantly boosts your daily checklist numbers, especially for waders, raptors, and bee-eaters.

To get the most out of a short 4-day safari, you must be prepared for early morning departures. Birds are most active and vocal during the dawn chorus. You will typically be up by 5:30 AM to cross the river or hit the tracks right as the gates open at 6:00 AM.

The vast open vistas of the northern bank mean many raptors and larger bustards will be spotted at a distance. Bring high-performance 8×42 or 10×42 binoculars, and ensure your camera gear that has a lens with at least 400mm to 600mm focal reach to capture clear shots from safari vehicles and moving boats.
