Tour Summary

A 5-day Rwanda honeymoon safari is the ultimate luxury “Land of a Thousand Hills” experience. Rwanda specializes in high-end, low-volume eco-tourism, making it an incredibly intimate, exclusive, and seamless destination for couples. Because Rwanda is a compact country with world-class roads, you can easily combine a bucket-list Mountain Gorilla trek in the misty volcanic rainforests of Volcanoes National Park with an elegant savanna or canopy experience without spending your entire honeymoon traveling.

Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park.

Arrive at Kigali International Airport (KGL), where your private guide meets you in a luxury 4×4. Take a highly scenic, smooth 2.5-hour drive winding through terraced green hills to Volcanoes National Park. Arrive at a world-class forest lodge in time for an evening fireplace lounge session, complete with a private couples’ foot massage to prepare you for trekking. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park.

Wake up early in the morning. Then head to the park headquarters for a private briefing before entering the bamboo forests. Hike alongside expert trackers to spend a life-changing one hour sitting just feet away from a wild mountain gorilla family.

Return to the lodge, or optional go for a cultural tour followed by a private, multi-course candlelit dinner celebrating your trek. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Golden Monkeys and Cultural experience in Volcanoes National Park.

After breakfast, you will head back into the forest for a lighter, playful trek to see the endangered Golden Monkeys, known for their bright orange fur and energetic leaps through the canopy. In the afternoon, take a private tour of the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Later dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Helicopter to the Canopy or Lake Kivu.

Take a breathtaking scenic helicopter flight over the hills from Volcanoes National Park straight into Nyungwe Forest National Park (a prehistoric rainforest host to chimpanzees) or boat cruise on Lake Kivu.

Upon arrival take a private sunset boat cruise on Lake Kivu to “Napoleon Island” to watch thousands of fruit bats take flight against the setting sun. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Kigali Art and Departure.

Take a morning drive or flight back to Kigali. Spend a few hours exploring Kigali’s vibrant contemporary art scene (like Inema Arts Center) and high-end fashion boutiques for custom-tailored souvenirs before heading to the airport for your flight home.

Gorilla Permits: Rwanda’s gorilla trekking permits are the most expensive in the world, strictly capped at $1,500 USD per person, per trek. This fee is just for the permit and does not include your luxury accommodation or transport.

Trekking Fitness and Prep: Mountain gorillas live in high-altitude rainforests (often over 8,000 to 10,000 feet). The hike to find them can take anywhere from 1 to 5 hours over steep, muddy, and uneven terrain.

The Porter System (A Honeymoon Lifesaver): At the park gate, you can hire a local porter for around $20 USD. Even if you are fit, hire one for each of you. They carry your backpacks, but more importantly, they safely pull and stabilize you through slippery, muddy slopes.

What to Pack (Strict Dress Code): Jungle trekking requires specific gear to protect you from stinging nettles and ants. You will look less like a traditional savanna safari-goer and more like a rainforest explorer.

Helicopter Shortcuts: While Rwanda’s roads are smooth and beautiful, driving from Volcanoes National Park in the north down to Nyungwe Forest in the southwest takes 5 to 6 hours. For a 5-day honeymoon, booking an internal helicopter charter through Akagera Aviation turns a grueling driving day into a spectacular 30-minute scenic flight.
