The main Sanctuary Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda, is the most significant habitat for Mountain Gorillas, with the highest number of habituated Gorilla families. It’s an Ancient UNESCO World Heritage Site and is well known for its high level of biodiversity and extremely challenging due to very wet conditions. The Park is vast and requires trekking operations to be managed from four independent Sectors, which come with their respective headquarters, specific accommodation options, and their own individual logistical requirements.
1. Buhoma Sector- The Northern Access Sector.
Buhoma is the oldest and most established trekking area.
General Trekking Profile: While generally regarded as having the least difficulty and shortest distances, this is not always the case. The slope of the terrain in most cases is less steep than that of the southern area.
Logistics and Accommodation: The range of accommodation available in the north varies from budget guesthouses to high-end lodges. The north is the most easily accessible region from north of Uganda (travelling from Queen Elizabeth National Park), providing the best opportunity for combining Gorilla trekking with a traditional Big Five tracking safari.
Availability: Buhoma eco-tourism trekking permits tend to be the first sold, due to the easier access and relatively less difficult terrain.
2.Ruhija Sector – High-Altitude East.
Ruhija is located on the eastern plateau of Bwindi and is considered a high-altitude region. As such, this region provides a somewhat different experience.
General Trekking Profile: The longer duration of treks in this region is attributed to the increased elevation. Due to the higher elevation, treks tend to be longer because gorillas can potentially cover more distance and the weather conditions in this region tend to be cooler and misty. This region has a great opportunity for photographers who desire to capture unique and stunning images of dramatic scenery.
Logistics and Accommodation: The accommodation options are a bit further away than those in Buhoma, but Ruhija provides the best opportunity to combine a trip to Lake Bunyonyi with trekking in Bwindi. Ruhija is a fantastic place for birdwatching because it is home to a diversity of birds.
3. Rushaga Sector (the Habituation hub)
Rushaga is the largest of the four sectors of Bwindi and is located in the southern part of the park. Rushaga has the greatest number of habituated gorilla families available for safari, which translates to an increased likelihood of obtaining a gorilla permit due to its larger occupancy as compared to the north.
Trekking Profile: The terrain is steep and offers a moderate to challenging hike. Rushaga hosts the most habituated gorilla families so the availability of permits is often more flexible than in the northern sectors.
GHEX Advantage: One of the major benefits of Rushaga is that it is one of the few places in the world where you can experience the Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHEX). With this exclusive GHEX permit, visitors will be able to spend 4 hours observing a semi-habituated family as compared to the standard 1 hour.
Logistics: Rushaga is also the closest sector to Kisoro town and the route to Rwanda, making it a convenient option for those doing a cross-border itinerary.
4. Nkuringo Sector (the Challenging sector).
Nkuringo sector is located in the extreme southwest corner of Uganda, Nkuringo is considered to be one of the most physically demanding treks.
Trekking Profile: Trekking in Nkuringo usually involves the descent and ascent of steep ridges and is often difficult even for fit hikers. However, the stunning scenery and sense of accomplishment provide great rewards.
Logistics: Nkuringo has very limited accommodation options, but those that do exist are often of high quality. Like Rushaga, Nkuringo also offers the GHEX option, making it a viable but challenging alternative.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is much smaller than Bwindi Impenetrable National Park; however, it is one of many Parks located within the larger Virunga Mountain range which spans across both, Rwanda (Rwanda) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It is also a distinct high-altitude trekking option for individuals wishing to go on an adventure of this kind.
Mgahinga offers a very different scenic environment.
Although Bwindi’s Forest is dense and impenetrable, the environment around Mgahinga features dramatic change in scenery due to being located at the base of three extinct volcanoes, Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabyinyo and Mt. Muhabura. The vegetation surrounding these volcanoes is much more open than the forestry of Bwindi and as such is more conducive to taking photographs as well as providing sweeping views of various parts of the volcanic region.
A Favorite Family of Gorillas.
The Nyakagezi Family of Gorillas is perhaps the most famous family in Mgahinga, due in part to their tendency to roam between Mgahinga and Rwanda/DRC prior to the booking of trekking permits. Until more recently, the Nyakagezi were often viewed as being nomadic in nature, making it extremely difficult to secure trekking permits due to uncertainty surrounding their movements; however, in more recent years, they have established a permanent resident group within the borders of the park, making trekking through the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park a safe and reliable option.
