What to pack on your gorilla trekking safari in Uganda

What to pack on your gorilla trekking safari in Uganda.

A gorilla trekking safari in Uganda is a once in a lifetime adventure, but it requires specific preparation. The experience takes place in the dense, mountainous rainforests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, environments that are often wet, muddy, and then challenging. Packing the right gear is not just about comfort; it is crucial for your safety, visibility and enjoyment, ensuring you are protected from stinging nettles, sharp thorns and then persistent moisture. This safari article outlines the essential items you need to pack for a successful and then rewarding encounter with the mountain gorillas.

Footwear and Leg Protection: Safety first.

Proper protection for your feet and legs in the single most important consideration for a successful gorilla trek.

Waterproof hiking boots.

You will be hiking up and down steep, slippery and muddy slopes, often stepping into ankle-deep puddles. Study, waterproof, ankle supporting hiking boots with an excellent tread are important. Break them in before your trip to prevent blisters. Avoid sneakers or running shoes, as they do not have the necessary grip and then waterproofing.

Long socks and Gaiters.

A pack several parks of thick, long socks (wool or synthetic) to cushion your feet and prevent rubbing. Even more important are waterproof gaiters. These cover the gap between your boots and then rousers, keeping mud, water, small stones and the aggressive, biting safari ants, out of your footwear. They also provide an essential barrier against stinging nettles, which are abundant in the undergrowth.

Trousers.

Wear lightweight, durable and long trousers (convertible pants are a good option). They should be tucked into your gaiters or socks to prevent insect from crawling up your legs and then to protect your skin from the sharp vegetation and then nettles. Avoid short entirely.

Upper Body layers: Managing temperature and rain.

The mountain weather in Bwindi can change rapidly, cycling from the cool morning mist to hot sunshine and then sudden downpours. So, it’s important to manage your body temperature and then staying dry in the right clothes.

Moisture-wicking base layers.

Start with a moisture-wicking base layer (T-short or long-sleeved shirt made of synthetic fabric or merino wool). Cotton should be avoided, as it retains moisture and will keep you cold once wet.

Long-sleeved shirt.

A comfortable long-sleeved shirt is important, even in warm weather. Like the trousers, this provides protection from the thorns, and insects while hiking through the dense vegetation. The neutral or muted colours (greens, browns, khaki) are the best, as bright colours can be potentially distracting the gorillas.

Waterproof and windproof jacket.

A lightweight, breathable, and fully waterproof rain jacket (and potentially rain pants) is important. Rain showers are common, brief, and intense. A jacket will keep you dry during the trek and then provide essential warmth on the cool, misty mountain slopes.

Essential trekking accessories.

A small backpack is necessary to carry your gear, water and lunch freeing your hands for moving the terrain.

Daypack.

A small, comfortable, waterproof daypack is needed to carry all your essentials. You may consider using a rain cover for added protection, especially for electronics.

Water and snacks.

Bring at least 2 to 3 litres of water (carried in the reusable bottles or a hydration pack) to stay hydrated during the tiresome hikes. Also pack the high energy snacks (energy bars, dried fruit, nuts) to fuel your body, specially since the treks can last anywhere from two to eight hours. Your lodge will provide a packed lunch, which your porter can carry.

Gardening gloves.

This is a small but critical item. Durable, leather or heavy-duty gardening gloves are essential for gripping vines, branches, and then roots for support as you climb or descend. They prevent painful scratches, cuts and then protect you from the nettles and then thistles.

Photography and then personal items.

While the gorillas are the subject, you must also protect yourself and your electronics.

Camera and protection.

Pack a camera with a good zoom lens (though you will be close, a zoom helps frame the shot). Crucially, bring plenty of spare batteries and then memory cards, as batteries drain faster in the cool, moist environment. Always keep your camera gear in a waterproof bag or dry sack inside your backpack. Flash photography is strictly not allowed near the gorillas.

Insect repellent and then sun protection.

While the high-altitude limits mosquitoes, apply insect repellent regularly, especially for the ticks and flies. Even with the cloud cover, the equatorial sun is strong; pack sunscreen, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat for sun protection during the starting and then final parts of the trek.

Porter hire money and tips.

Bring enough cash (US Dollars or Ugandan Shillings) for the essential purchase of the porter (highly recommended, costing around 15$ to 20$) and to provide tips for your guide, trackers, and then porters. Hiring a porter is crucial for support and provides direct income to the local community.
