The Habituation Process.
The process of habituating a wild gorilla family will take a long and careful effort to ensure the gorilla family is comfortable with human presence (the goal of the habituation) and that the gorilla family does not become dependent on humans for their survival. The average duration of the habituation process takes approximately 2 years to 5 years, depending on the various circumstances and conditions experienced during the habituation period. The method used to habituate a gorilla family involves repeated visits to the designated gorilla family, speaking to them in a low tone of voice (similar to how we would speak to a child), and allowing the gorilla family to become familiar with human sight, sound and smell as non-threatening. Once the habituation process is complete, the designated family can be opened to standard, 1-hour tourist treks, which provide the funds necessary for the continued protection of the designated family.
Your Assistant’s Responsibilities.
You will be joining the UWA research staff as a helper to assist with acclimating the gorillas to human visitors who may be unfamiliar to them. You will be observing gorilla behavior as the researchers document their movements, identify individual gorillas, and assess their general health. These researchers continuously comment on gorilla behavior, with explanations for what they are doing and what the purpose of that behavior is from a scientific perspective. With this educational element, visitors change their experience from simply gazing at the gorillas to an enjoyable, educational experience where they will also be active participants in the overall experience.
Logistical Details of the GHEX.
Because the GHEX involves semi-habituated, more difficult-to-access families, the total time commitment for this trek is considerably more than that required for a regular trek.
Location Difficulty.
The GHEX is currently only being offered in the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which are both very steep and difficult to navigate, so participants are expected to have a certain level of fitness. Participants will be asked to arrive earlier than for a typical trek. On typical treks, the participant briefing takes place around 7:30 AM. The GHEX will generally require arrival at the departure point before this.
Length of Expedition.
The GHEX is a long day on the mountain, generally, it is planned to begin approximately the same time as sunrise and finish approximately the same time as sunset. The whole day is divided into two main segments like The start of the day, and the end of the day.
The trek to find a semi-habituated family is unpredictable. Since this family is less comfortable with humans, it could be ranging further from its nest or moving into denser forest than other, more fully habituated families. A trek could last anywhere from 30 minutes to eight hours; therefore, a lot of physical stamina is needed.
After finding the semi-habituated family, you can begin observing them for four hours.
